History of AMSA
In April 2007 The Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA) was set up by
the independent community based Men's Sheds throughout the country. The number
of Sheds had grown rapidly but in the early days there was no central reference
source and a great deal of duplication and "wheel re-invention" occurred.
AMSA was set up to act as a resource centre for all Sheds, to represent and
promote the idea of Independent Community Men's Sheds and act as a central hub
for information exchange using its website and the regular newsletters, copies
of which are archived on this site.
With over 400 Member Sheds representing an estimated 30,000 men, AMSA is now
the largest men’s support organisation in Australia with State organisations
similar to NSWMSA existing throughout the country.
AMSA is a not for profit organisation, a registered Health Promotion
Charity and is endorsed as a Tax Deductible Gift Recipient
The Aims of AMSA are given below and these have also been adopted by the
NSWMSA
- To represent Men's Sheds to Governments, NGOs, funding sources etc.
- To publicize and promote the Men's Shed concept.
- To assist in training, OHS, funding and insurance advice.
- To maintain communications between Sheds.
- To provide Start up information documentation for new sheds.
- To act as a neutral body where overall decisions are required.
